La Familia Restaurant Review - Portland, Maine

This is my third time going to La Familia Restaurant and each time gets better than the last. They have a wonderful blend Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Caribbean influences. I feel the name of their restaurant says everything. They are the most welcoming family that makes you want to join their family. They recognized me from my past visits and seemed so happy to see me again.

I made a reservation because they only have about eight tables and if they all fill up at the same time it could be quite a wait. I am sorry to say that it was not necessary. I hope that other people discover them soon because they are awesome and I hope they are around for a long time.

We arrived at 6 pm and met up with our friends Myranda and Owen. Myranda generously offered to share her Groupon with us. She bought it for $15 and we were able to get $30 worth of food. The host greeted us immediately and brought us to our table.

There were two servers in the room and they both helped attend to all the tables. The first server came and took our drink orders. We all went with water and it was a sign of an awesome server because they knew the boys would need covers for the drinks.

The boys amused themselves with blowing bubbles in the water for quite some time.

The boys also took turns with my phone taking pictures of random items in the restaurant.

I really like how we are able to see into the kitchen in the restaurant. It really makes you feel like you are in a family home being served your dinner.

The boys shared nachos for dinner. Who doesn't love to have chips for dinner. It had delicious marinated beef on top along with cheese, beans, and pico de gallo. It was also served with sour cream on the side. What you probably can't tell in the picture but the plate was shaped like a fish. I really liked that plate...I wish it could have made it's way home with me.

The boys really enjoyed those nachos. It was a really generous serving. Even with the boys sharing it, they still had over half left over for me to take home to the 15-year old.

Myranda went with the tacos. She had a choice of Beef, Pork, or Fish. She chose the beef and it looked awesome. It had lettuce, cheese, pico de gallo, beans, and sour cream on top. It was served with a bowl of rice. She said it was super filling and really enjoyed it.

I went with the grilled skirt steak. I wish I could have another one it was so good. The steak was marinated in a garlic sauce, and while I don't think anyone would want to kiss me right now, it was worth it. It came with 2 grilled tortillas, rice, black beans, and a salad with a wedge of cheese on the side. The salad on the side was a pleasant surprise. I thought it was just a garnish but the lettuce had some type of dressing on it that had a real kick to it. Very delicious and a nice side to the steak.

While I was waiting for the boys to finish dinner I noticed this really neat chandelier and wanted to share the picture.

My final thoughts on La Familia Restaurant is that you should make plans soon to visit them. It will be well worth your time. If you want to give them a try they are located at: 906 Brighton Ave., Portland, ME.
